The Last Minute: Delivering Outside In to The Huffington Post

A Normal Friday…

Last Thursday started as cold fall-but-feels-like-winter Michigan day at Allied Productions. We were busy wrapping up a few projects, and finalized some awesome work with the Millwrights and Carpenters Union (spoiler alert, you might see some of our work on US 131 soon…), and then we got a call. Followed quickly, by a text message.

Our friend’s at Vacation Land Studios needed help. A few weeks ago we highlighted our time on set providing sound recording services. Well, they were delivering the final cut of that footage for the Difference Maker 100 documentary series episode highlighting Out Side In Stable’s equine-therapy program for Veterans and former thoroughbred horses.

Fantastic news! The problem? They needed some pick-up voice-over work from Jen McVoy the owner of Out Side In Stables. And they were finishing the edit in L.A. And it was already noon. And they needed to deliver by midnight to meet a Veteran’s Day deadline.

We sprang into action. We called Jen, wrangled our audio gear from another shoot, and were off to the races. Or stables. Jen stayed late at the stables, awaiting our arrival. Within 10 minutes of arriving we had our Zoom F4 recorder, Rode Lavs, and Senheiser Boom setup to capture audio and deliver a suitable mix. We phoned in the Vacation Land crew and Nick helped direct Jen through a few different takes delivering the lines.

We wrapped. Jen went home. And we had to upload the mixed file to Google drive via our cell-phone hotspot as we drove back to the Studio. We crossed our fingers and hoped it was what the team needed.

An email notification splashed across our phones…

“This is great!”

And it really is. The final product is a great example of documentary storytelling. Jen’s passion for providing an outlet for both the Veterans and horses shines through. It’s genuine, without being overt. Please take some time and watch the final video, and take a few moments to learn more about how you can help Veterans and others dealing with PTSD in your area.
